Advertisements, or "Ads" for short, are as old as marketing itself and can be tailored to any form to reach the target audience.
Animal Supply Co.'s Retail Messenger utilizes a flexible layout, so I created multiple sizes for as many of the ads as I could.
Why? Because that way, it didn't matter how much room is on the page, the desired message could still be placed there.
Here I have a sampling of the ads I produced (showing every size for each one would take forever, haha!).
Use either the arrows or dots to peruse the slideshow below at your leisure.
Animal Supply Co. has a freezer program to help retailers acquire freezing and refrigeration units so that they can stock a wider variety of food and treats for their customers. The ad used here in the May 2019 Ohio Valley Edition (and others) of the Retail Messenger reminds retailers that it's ok if their budget won't allow them to spring for a big glass door unit - there are other options to help them get started and they can upgrade later with the revenue they make selling frozen pet food and treats.
Animal Supply Co. had recently rebuilt and expanded their electronic ordering system, and wanted to promote the improvements and how it can help make ordering product easier, more efficient, and more accurate than traditional methods (such as faxing). Shown is a slightly condensed form of the ad used in the Retail Messenger May 2019 Ohio Valley Edition and beyond.
Around the same time as the e-ordering improvements, Animal Supply Co. also rebuilt the website from the ground up to be bigger and better than before. I then created this ad, as you can see here in the Retail Messenger April 2019 Ohio Valley Edition (and it was used in other editions too), to call out the new features retailers can find and use when they visit the Animal Supply Co. website, and how it can help them be even more efficient than before with building and placing orders.
We all know the saying "there's an app for that," and Animal Supply Co. decided to act on that and make their own app alongside the new website for retailers to use. I created this ad, used here in the April 2019 Ohio Valley Edition (and others) of the Retail Messenger, to showcase the app's features in a way that's fun, clear, and easy to understand.
Sometimes downsizing an ad calls for a dramatic change in layout, and yet, the core elements must remain intact. This half version of the mobile app ad used here in the May 2019 Ohio Valley Edition (and others) of the Retail Messenger, communicates the same great features of the app in a more condensed form that still feels light and airy.
An Animal Supply Co. Buying Show is, in essence, a trade show hosted by ASC. Vendors set up booths to promote their products and offer special limited time deals, educational seminars are given on what's happening in the pet industry, and a dinner is held for social and networking opportunities. Retailers are cordially invited to sign up for and attend the event. Here in the Retail Messenger August 2019 Southeast Edition is an ad informing the retailers of the area about the details and encouraging them to register.
You could say the joy of the recent digital wins (website, ordering system, and new app) inspired Animal Supply Co. to undergo a little brand refresh in summer of 2019 - specifically in regard to colors and some of the fonts and icons used, as well as some adjustments to layout in various templates. As you can see in the September 2019 Northwest Edition of the Retail Messenger, I had to update certain ads so that they match the new branding standards while still communicating what they need to (compare against the previous slide).
I kept the design for this ad quite simple, as its message is much simpler than others I made. I went for a high contrast look to catch the retailer's attention, then wrote the advantage the retailer will gain if they sign up to receive regular emails. The result is a bold (but not in your face) ad that can be used anytime and anywhere, like in this May 2019 Ohio Valley Edition of the Retail Messenger. It's one of the few ads where the team felt that only a 1/3 size was needed - one of those "enough said, no need to elaborate" situations.
Animal Supply Co. partnered with SPINS, a data and analytics company, with the goal of helping retailers, especially small and independently owned ones, understand the broader world of business and industry trends better so that they can grow and thrive in the competitive pet market. This was a case where I was provided assets and a style guide by a third party (SPINS) to create ads for them within the Retail Messenger, such as this September 2019 Northwest Edition, that communicate the benefits of using their service to the retailer in an engaging and easy to understand way. Between the info-graphic and the colorful paws at the bottom, I made the ad relevant to the pet industry and a bit more fun.
As much as I wanted to, it would have just been too cramped to include the info-graphic and all the text associated with it that's on the full page version in the half sized one. So I took a "food for thought" approach, using the inquiring headline and the supplied answer underneath it to spark the curiosity of retailers and entice them to visit the web address in the bottom right to find out more. While simpler in this smaller form, as you see here in the May 2019 Ohio Valley Edition of the Retail Messenger, it maintains the core message that utilizing the services of SPINS will improve business.

SuperZoo is its own animal - the largest North America pet retail event! Run by the WPA (World Pet Association), SuperZoo is an annual event where vendors, distributors and retailers all gather for a show that covers over 330,000 square feet! The little ad on the left I made encourages retailers to come join the fun and tells them Animal Supply Co.'s booth number so they know where to find them.
Animal Supply Co. owns a handful brands under the banner Neighborhood Pet Products. Among them was Rogue River, which produced high quality, 100% natural bones, chews and treats for dogs from USDA inspected sources. This medium ad and its small and large look-alikes were used quite regularly in the Retail Messenger, like in this June 2019 Southern California Edition.
Animal Supply Co. owns a handful brands under the banner Neighborhood Pet Products. Among them is Nature's Cafe, which itself can be divided into two distinct lines of product. The ad shown here is for the Wild Bird side of Nature's Cafe, and as the name implies it produces many varieties of healthy seed blends, bird suet, and attractive feeders designed for wild birds (including hummingbirds!). This small ad and its larger look-alikes were used quite regularly in the Retail Messenger, like in this June 2019 Southern California Edition.
Animal Supply Co. owns a handful brands under the banner Neighborhood Pet Products. Among them is Nature's Cafe, which itself can be divided into two distinct lines of product. The ad shown here is for the Small Animal & Domestic Bird side of Nature's Cafe, and as the name implies it produces a variety of healthy food and treats for smaller creatures (such as rabbits, Guinea pigs, chinchillas, and more) and domesticated birds (parakeets, cockatiels, and more). This small ad and its larger look-alikes were used quite regularly in the Retail Messenger, like in this June 2019 Southern California Edition.
Animal Supply Co. owns a handful brands under the banner Neighborhood Pet Products. Among them is Petcrest, which produces a plethora of supplies for dogs and cats - beds, mats, crates, scratch posts, toys, chews, grooming tools, and the list keeps going. At the time, Petcrest wanted to promote its expanded line of crates, so I made a design for just that within its brand look. This small ad and its larger look-alikes were used quite regularly in the Retail Messenger, like in this June 2019 Southern California Edition.
